Photos from January Art Walk

Face-off

There wasn't a lot of elbow room in Wynwood's galleries last night.

Last night Wynwood was jammed for Art Walk. I don’t know if the capacity crowd came out to relive last month’s Art Basel energy, but the sidewalks were like I-95 at rush hour and, on a cool night, the galleries stayed plenty warm from collective body heat alone. More than usual, the art took a backseat to the people-watching and food trucking. I have no problem with that. It takes more concentration than I can muster to assess a gallery’s collection amid the Second Saturday commotion, though interesting work will manage to part the seas, if only for a moment (case in point: Transylvania, Chris Dean’s show of quasi-holographic lenticular pieces at the Harold Golen Gallery). The true value of Art Walk is how it gives Wynwood the feel of a real-city neighborhood one night per month. I’d love to be able to experience that vibe every weekend in Miami, and not just in Wynwood. Unfortunately it’s hard to come by. But if Art Walk keeps drawing big crowds, other hoods in the city should follow suit with nighttime street fairs of their own. (Shouldn’t Sobe be able to pull off something like this?) Until then, Art Walk will remain Miami’s best monthly event.

Here are some photos taken along N.W. 2nd Avenue.

I was taking graffiti shots with my cam earlier around the neighborhood. Then it occurred to me that it was the 2nd Saturday of the month so a friend and I decided to go out there. It was a beautiful atmosphere from the art, music, people and the awesome energy. I’ve lived in Miami most of my life and have never had such a good time as I did at my first Wynwood Art walk, all free! Looking forward to going next month :)
