At Churchill’s tonight, a measly $5 gets you in to see Jacuzzi Boys, fresh off a month-long east coast tour, and ten-piece funk collective Psychic Mirrors. It’s an intriguing coupling: Jacuzzi Boys’ Velvety, open-high-hat garage rock (perfectly suited to Churchill’s) and Psychic Mirrors’ synthy, syncopated, precisely structured jams (perfectly unsuited to Churchill’s).
While we’ve posted about the Jacuzzi Boys plenty, Psychic Mirrors first came across our radar at Endless Summer II (March 3, Grand Central). Here’s a clip from that show.
I wasn’t sure about Psychic Mirrors at the show — from frontman Ryan De Grandy’s bindi to the backup singers’ choreographed dance moves, I got the hint of a put on despite the decet’s worthy musicianship and rare ability to get a Miami crowd dancing. They may just be uber sincere, and tonight may be when I stop being a “herb” and figure them out.
As for Jacuzzi Boys, I know pretty well what to expect, although I’ve never seen them at Churchill’s and I hear they usually kill there. I believe this is their first local show after the tour, which included a live-set on Lou Reed’s favorite radio station, Jersey City-based WFMU. The Boys played 12 tracks, all of which are available for free download. Here’s one of the tracks, “Planet of the Dreamers”, to get you in the mood for tonight.
Teepee and Feathers are also on the bill. You can RSVP for the show on Facebook.
