Miami Bike Events in July
By Jordan Melnick | July 1st, 2011 | No CommentsI culled this list from a more comprehensive one on the The Miami Bike Scene. For the most part, I filtered out the more grueling events and left the ones geared toward the casual and semi-casual cyclist.
7/01 – Miami Bike Polo
The sport of kings with bikes has been attracting a lot of attention lately, with recent press coverage from the Herald, WLRN, and Deco Drive. The MBP crew plays at Jose Marti Park every Friday at 7 p.m. and every Sunday at 1 p.m.
7/03 – Tour de France Viewing Party/Fundraiser for Damian Lopez Alphonso
Alphonso is a Cuban cyclist with aspirations of qualifying for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. You can learn more about him in this New York Times profile.
7/09 – Miami Beach Community Ride
“The Miami Beach Community Ride is brought to you by Miami Beach Bicycle Center and the City of Miami Beach. This ride is perfect to meet and greet new people, get exercise, and have a great time. Thanks to the Miami Beach Police, the traffic is stopped and the riders can enjoy a continuous safe ride. At the half way point the riders stop to drink water and take a quick breath. The best thing about the ride is that its FREE! The ride is every second Saturday of the month starting from the store at 9 a.m.”
7/09 – Emerge Miami Sweet Treats Ride II
“Attended the Sweet Treats Ride in June 2010? It’s back! and we’re covering Midtown to South Beach in this round of sweet shops: two ice cream shops and one bakery. Two out of three will have vegan options.”
7/16 and 7/17 – 2nd Annual 2011 South Florida Bike Expo
” … the 2011 South Florida Bike Expo presented by Bike America, the largest expo and sale of bicycles and bicycle accessories in South Florida’s history.”
7/17 – Ñooo! Que Carrera
“This type of event is excellent for those who would like to taste the waters of competitive cycling. For those starting, the Cat 4-5 is the perfect place to start. You will be riding with more experienced riders who will not interfere in your riding and will help you to gain the experience you need for more competitive cycling.”
7/21 – Get In Gear Bike Ride: North Miami
“Get in Gear for the summer! The community bike ride is back on Thursday evenings through September. Commit yourself to a healthier lifestyle by participating in this 10 mile ride through North Miami. The ride is safe (where else do you get a police escort?), it’s easy (stops are made during the ride for water and restroom breaks) and it’s fun (bring your friends!).”
7/26 – BPAC Meeting
“A Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) was created by the MPO Governing Board for the Miami Urbanized Area in 1984, as a subcommittee of the CTAC. In 1985, the BAC was made a separate committee. In the 1990’s, the committee took on pedestrian issues as the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC).”
7/29 – Miami Critical Mass
This is the ride that everyone with a bicycle, tricycle, or unicycle should go to. Check out our photos from the June ride.
