Five months after releasing their eighth album, Stay Kids, the Miami duo of Brian Robertson and Michael John Hancock — aka, ANR — have announced the release of a 7” record via NYC tastemakers Neon Gold Records. The wax will feature “It’s Around You”, a post-apocalyptic R&B party track off of Stay Kids, and “Blood on Blood”, a crescendoing epic with a fed-up Hancock on vocals (“Raise your lazy voices … these are brutal choices”) and a sped-up piano interlude that conjures the harpsichord solo in The Beatles’ “In My Life”. Exclusive to the single, “Blood on Blood” was mixed by Ben Allen, who produced Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion. Allen has also worked with Deerhunter, Washed Out, Cee Lo, and Givers. You can listen to “Blood on Blood” after the jump.
In December, Neon Gold signed a joint venture with Columbia Records to release more seven inches in 2011, a sign that the music industry writ large intends to capitalize on an indie trend. The ANR release is now available for pre-order. It will go on sale on Aug. 29.
In its blog post about the 7″, Neon Gold dubs ANR “Miami’s finest” and likens Hancock and Robertson to “a buddy cop duo whose lethal weapon is their interminable arsenal of experimental pop hooks.” Run by recent college grads Derek Davies and Lizzie Plapinger, the young NYC-based label (est. in 2008) is no stranger to Miami’s music scene. On their popular mp3 blog, Davies and Plapinger have proclaimed their ANR love many times over the last six months, and the Neon Gold website has also featured Miami’s PLAINS, Lil Daggers, and Millionyoung.
With the ANR 7″, Neon Gold continues an impressive run of releases dating back to 2008, when the label released the 7″ “Sleepyhead” by Passion Pit, a synthpop outfit out of Cambridge, Mass. Since then, Neon Gold has scouted and released singles by Ellie Goulding, Gotye, Marina & the Diamonds, the Knocks, and Dom.
The ANR 7″ will go on sale a few days after the duo embarks on a U.S./Canada tour, starting on Aug. 25 in Washington, D.C., with stops at the Mercury Lounge in NYC (Aug. 31) and the Empty Bottle in Chicago (Sept. 7). In addition to the 7″, ANR will release the “deluxe edition” of Stay Kids on Sept. 13 via Miami-based 10K Island Records. It will include a few new tracks, including the recently leaked “New Armor”.
