Ticket Giveaway: Best Coast with Those Darlings at Grand Central

By | July 5th, 2012 | 42 Comments

The California indie rockers who stole everyone’s heart and never returned it are set to make their Miami debut at Grand Central on Tuesday, July 10.

Best Coast singer/guitarist Bethany Cosentino, the closest thing to indie’s leading lady, and bassist/guitarist Bobb Bruno summoned Jon Brion’s production skill to record the follow up to Crazy for You, their gritty surf pop debut. The resulting LP, The Only Place, illuminates the band’s natural twangy (pseudo-country) jangle, Cosentino’s Tracy Bonham-like commanding-yet-girlish singing, and vintage pop songwriting (all without giving in to Brion’s sometimes overwhelming whimsy). Nashville’s Those Darlins, an all-girl trio that plays a sneeringly punkish interpretation of Shangri-La’s styled pop, will open for Best Coast.

We have a pair of tickets for the show to give away to one lucky fan. To enter to win, explain why Miami’s coast is — or isn’t — the Best Coast in the comment section of this post. We will announce the winner on the Beached Miami Facebook page on Monday afternoon. Until then, listen up.

Update: And the winner is…

Very pasty tourists that turn red very quickly.

Before placing judgement: I’m not an expert on coasts. The only other coasts I’ve been to are a small variety in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic (I like to backpack and see a lot of the out-of-the-way beaches when I do travel). I also acknowledge the documentaries and ads I’ve watched, photos I’ve seen, and reading I’ve done on other coasts are possibly based on biased information. After all, who’d want to turn away possible tourists? (And their power of their dollars in this economy.)
This being said, from my experience Miami’s coast is one of the worst coasts. Miami’s Beaches are a playground for the rich and sleazy, bespeckled with hotel after hotel vying for the best view but the worst service, and built on the broken dreams of industrialists attempts at swamp-draining and 70’s/80’s drug money. The traffic is nauseating, parking is a nearly impossible feat, the beachgoers are either repellant, perplexing, or pity-inducing, everything is horribly overpriced, and ultimately it is not worth the effort to visit Miami Beach. However, on a lighter note, Best Coast is a lovely indie buzz band and a hard-working girly like me could use the free tickets. If you don’t mind the pandering, Beached staff, I’ll leave my last words on the matter… Best Coast tickets, pretty please?

Worst Coast (or at least one of the worst) Why? Too many low quality hotels vying for beach space, the people are either perplexingly odd, repulsive, or pity-inducing, polluted and dirty, way too much traffic, and on top of all that expensive.

    Best Coast = Miami
    1) the water is warm year round
    2) crystal clear water
    3) sandbars that turn into party hubs
    4) you can go to the beach for free or take up a spot at a 5 star hotel, take your pick
    5) the ocean glitters around our city!

We are the best coast because…

California has beautiful beaches but their waters are cold as all hell.

We have beautiful beaches and WARM water. :)

    – beautiful weather

    – NBA champs
    – a short road trip away from awesome theme parks

“Why would you live anywhere else?” Bethany Cosentino asks in her song, “The Only Place”…except she’s talking about California. Wooowww, Mami. Here’s why:

We have the best team in the NBA
Will Smith has a song about Miami…
In Miami, boobs are a fashion accessory–and we like bling

    Das it.

    No Great Whites,
    Lots o’ men in tights,
    Sparkling lights,
    Drunken douche bag fights,
    Haulover kites,
    Men with highlights,
    Never any frostbites,
    Mites, termites and some fleabites,
    A bit south Hemingway typewrites,
This coast is OUT OF SIGHT!!

  15. 15 Robert said at 9:46 pm on July 8th, 2012:

Miami is obviously the best coast because there’s no other place where you have the possibility of witnessing all these things in a day:
    – Face-eating “zombie” startling the nation
    – Gorgeous people cruising around the beaches
    – A pocketful of sunshine
    – A pocketful of thunderstorms
    – Pleasant blue waters

Unpredictable in nature, but totally unforgettable.

  16. 16 Lisette Alvarez said at 3:12 am on July 9th, 2012:

Having been born in Cuba, raised in Miami for most of my life, and then moving out west to Los Angeles, the truth is, the best Coast is the one that feels like home. Cuba was once my home, but Fidel changed that. South Beach used to be my playground, but now those I played with are now playing with their babies. Cali won’t substitute my past, but if you can learn to make anyplace your home, the coast will just be something extra to look at it, while you look back and reminisce.

But at least in California weed is legal.

  27. 27 Steffie said at 10:05 am on July 9th, 2012:

Miami’s coast is the best because the only time you will have a bad time is if you forget to put on your sunblock and been laying out under the sun for a few hours and then realize that you look like an abnormally huge lobster. Other than that, you might start feeling like you are beginning to melt and that a few ounces of fat might have been shed from how much you been sweating, Miami can do this to a person on occasions, but hey the water is always so inviting, so jump right in!

  28. 28 Catalina said at 10:29 am on July 9th, 2012:

    because the sun was high

The Atlantic’s got it going on. Let me count the ways.
1300 miles northward on this fine East coast we find Lady Liberty giving the mother lands out in Europe a salute. 1300 due North my best friend and I experienced Lady Bethany spinning some serious pop hits (Mariah, Britney, & Whitney, just to mention a few) to the sounds of the Northern Atlantic; she probably could’ve torn off the roof of the Museum of Natural History in New York City and given the East a brand new observatory.
Coming back down to the South (and Earth after that musical session) I find myself and my pocket New York’d out, and some tickets would show my ears the love my mouth gets every time I nod my head to Miami greatness and eat a ham croqueta.
The East coast, specifically Miami’s coast is the best coast to welcome these excellent pair of California Humans because:
    1. we are the finest purveyors of cuban pastries and fine spanglish discourse.
    2. all arrows to what most earthlings deem “fun” point straight HERE.
    3. is the number of tall gentlemen we throughly celebrate for, oh, I don’t know, making our city the National Basketball champs.

So let me and a bunch of my Best Coast adoring friends and fellow Miami residents, give the proper warmth of this side of the country we call home. We might not know the exact way to Napa Valley or Disneyland, but we can get to Abuelo’s liquor store and the highway to disney with our eyes closed. “Welcome to Miami” -Will Smith, 1997.

The west is the best, where else can you view the mountains from the shore, or walk along the enchanting boardwalk with all of its colorful characters on Venice Beach?

  34. 34 Christopher said at 12:35 pm on July 9th, 2012:

Look through this page at all of the reasons people are listing for why Miami has the worst coast. All of them are really, really good reasons to completely avoid our part of the coast. But has it ever actually stopped anyone from coming to Miami’s coast? Nope. And you know why? Because it’s attached to Miami and that’s what makes it the best coast.

    4) An overwhelmingly entertaining amount of plastic surgery
    5) New York City is on the same coast
