Fresh off of receiving a $500,000 vote of confidence from the Knight Foundation and landing two spots in the Sundance Film Festival’s 2013 Short Film Program, the Borscht Film Festival is getting ready to present its eighth edition of Miami-inspired independent cinema. (See ticket giveaway details at bottom of post.)
Comprising a series of film-centric events and culminating with the main screening at the Arsht Center on Saturday, December 15 (tickets available), Borscht 8 will feature work by international filmmakers, including Adan Jodorowsky (son of avant-garde icon Alejandro Jodorowsky) and Sean Metelerkamp (director of the impossible-not-to-watch-30-times-in-a-row Die Antwoord video for “Zef Side”).
Other notable Borscht 8 presenters include Court 13, the New Orleans-based film collective behind the breakout film Beasts of the Southern Wild, and local GIF grandee Bleeding Palm, whose animated short about Chris Bosh’s adventures in the multiverse earned a cease-and-desist letter from the Miami Heat center’s lawyers.
Then, of course, there will be a new short film by Borscht director Lucas Leyva and artist Jillian Mayer (Mayer\Leyva), listed among the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” by Filmmaker Magazine after their short Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke screened at Sundance earlier this year.
All of which is to say, there’s a lot to look forward to during Borscht 8. To make sure you don’t miss out — last year, hundreds couldn’t get into Borscht’s main event at the Arsht — you can purchase tickets now by visiting moviesbro.com.
For the risk takers out there, you can enter to win a pair of tickets to Borscht 8’s Arsht Center screening on Saturday, December 15, by shouting “Send me to Borscht 8!” on the Beached Miami Facebook page with THIS LINK included in the post. We will announce the winner via Facebook on Thursday.
In the meantime, check out Borscht’s own Facebook page for information on everything they’ve got in store for Miami’s movie-mad masses. You can also take a look at Borscht 8’s event rundown here.
