The Borscht Film Festival bills itself as “Miami’s fresh local independent film fest.” It started as an underground project by a group of New World School of the Arts alum, including festival director (“minister of the interior”) Lucas Leyva. It has since become one of the most anticipated cultural events in Miami and had several commissions screen at international film festivals, such as Cannes and Sundance. The last festival — Borscht 7 — screened 23 films at the Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall in downtown Miami for a crowd of approximately 2,000 people on April 23, 2011. It featured a film by acclaimed director Barry Jenkins and a short written by award-winning playwright and actor Tarrell Alvin McCraney.
