Chick Flicks: The Woodmans

February 25th 2012, 7:00 pm
at Girls' Club (Ft. Lauderdale)

Join us for an evening screening and informal dialogue as we spotlight the cinematic treatments of contemporary female artists with the documentary The Woodmans (2010) and Samantha Salzinger's short film Ascension (2011). Emmy-Award winning director Scott Willis' documentary The Woodmans follows artists Betty and George Woodman balancing the demands of artmaking with grief over their young photographer daughter's suicide. Full of ambiguities and rich explorations of self-portraiture and the body, the small, intimate body of photographic work left behind by Francesca Woodman is revered in the art world. Samantha Salzinger's works explore fabricated environments where reality is as malleable as a simulation as lifelike as reality. Screening begins at 7pm, followed by the FAT Village ArtWalk, from 7- 11pm. View Woodman family's work at Gallery Diet in Wynwood in the four-person exhibition, The Woodmans, Feb 17. - March 31.

at Alliance Francaise

Indigènes (128 min), directed Rachid Bouchareb, R, 2007 with Samy Nacéri, Roschdy Zem, Bernard Blancan, Sami Bouajila,Jamel Debbouze. Algeria, 1943, through Italy and France, to Alsace in early 1945, with a coda years later. Arabs volunteer to fight Nazis to liberate France, their motherland. We follow Saïd, dirt poor, an orderly for a grizzled sergeant, Martinez, a pied noir with some willingness to speak up for his Arab troops; Messaoud, a crack shot, who in Province falls in love with a French woman who loves him back; and Abdelkader, a corporal, a budding intellectual with a keen sense of injustice. The men fight with courage against a backdrop of small and large indignities: French soldiers get better food, time for leave, and promotions. Is the promise of liberty, equality, and fraternity hollow? Twelve nominations, 6 won. Nominated for the best Foreign Film in the Oscar 2007 and the cast rightly shared the best actor award at Cannes.

at Miami

Join us at the Bakehouse Art Complex for an amazing October show. Live Music with Don Sha & the Lalibela Band, Wine and over 70 artist studios will be on view! There is No Cost - Entry is FREE “ME TOO: All the same”. The artists will be creating self-portraits that reveal a side of themselves that they seldom show to society. The concept behind this self-portrait is that in our day to day lives, as we interact with the rest of society, there is a side of ourselves that we suppress because we have been conditioned to think that this side of ourselves is somehow unacceptable or not mainstream. As humans, we have more in common than not, and this exhibition will help guests explore the connection of their hidden selves with the artists’ through these revealing self-portraits. To enhance the guests’ experience, an interactive installation consisting of a video booth will allow the guest to enter and pose or perform exposing side of themselves they seldom show.
