Miami Critical Mass is a group bike ride open to all cyclists that takes place on the last Friday of every month. Sometimes drawing as many as 1,000 riders, it leaves from Government Center downtown (111 N.W. 1st Street) at 7 p.m. and travels through different neighborhoods. The distance of a typical route varies between 10 and 20 miles. The target pace of the ride is 12 miles per hour, though speeds vary depending on a lot of factors (traffic, route awareness, et cetera). Critical Mass is not intended to be a race but a leisurely celebration of bicycles. The ride has no official organizer, although active participants of Miami’s bike community, including The Miami Bike Scene, work hard to make it safe and fun every month.
