Adding to an already amazing fall concert lineup in South Florida — Mobb Deep, Ghostface Killah, Hunx & His Punx, Manu Chao, Peter Bjorn & John, Bryan Ferry, Ted Leo, Junior Boys, The Drums, Odd Future, and AIDS Wolf are ALL playing locally between September and November — OFF! is coming to play the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale on Oct. 23.
Led by Black Flag founding member and Circle Jerks singer Keith Morris, OFF! came out of nowhere in 2010, releasing four 7” records before compiling them all onto their enigmatically titled debut, First Four EPs, last December via Vice Recordings. The 18-minute album is as aggressive, passionate, and reckless as any of Morris’s proto-hardcore outfits and indisputably proves he’s no old man trying to fit in. (Listen to “Jeffrey Lee Pierce” after the jump, taking a moment to appreciate Raymond Pettibon‘s super cool cover art.)
Boasting Red Kross bassist Steve McDonald, Burning Brides guitarist Dimitri Coats, and Hot Snakes drummer Mario Rubalcaba, OFF! was a happy accident for hardcore aficionados. Coats, originally slated to produce the Circle Jerks’ seventh album (which never happened and now probably never will), connected with Morris during studio downtime. Long story, short: a strong collaboration was ignited, Rubalcaba and McDonald jumped on board, and Morris’s whirling dervishness found itself yet another outlet.
