This Saturday’s Art Walk in Wynwood and the Design District is the last before Art Basel hysteria begins in full force. As such, many galleries in the district are either leaving up shows that opened in October, or just waiting to roll out the big guns in early December. That said, here are a few exhibition openings on our radar.

Among many other exhibitions opening this week, artist Cecilia Paredes presents photographs that focus on the body as “an altar to our existence” in her solo show at Diana Lowenstein Gallery.
After a sluggish summer, and with Art Basel Miami Beach not far off, Miami’s cultural scene promises to swing back into high gear this Saturday with the first Wynwood Art Walk of the fall. It is also another, more somber first: the first edition of this open gallery night since the death of pioneering developer Tony Goldman.

In the Miami art scene, August is usually even deader than July, with every sane moneyed person traveling elsewhere during this brutally hot month. So it’s surprising that galleries in Wynwood and the Design District have plenty of new exhibitions opening in time for Art Walk on Saturday. Another pleasant surprise: the shows aim squarely at locals. Here are the exhibitions on our radar.

With the summer sun exerting its withering force upon Miami, galleries in Wynwood and Design District seem to be cooling their heels this month. There are precious few exhibitions opening for Art Walk on Saturday — in fact, I turned up only three new shows amid a host of holdover exhibitions. That said, here’s what’s on the radar.

This coming Saturday galleries in Wynwood and the Design District will open their doors for the first Art Walk of the summer. In the spirit of the season, expect high heat, threat of rain, and a lot of missed putts on a golf green (see Get Lost below). Here are a handful of the new exhibitions on our radar.

Despite the cancellation of the food truck roundup that typically accompanies Art Walk in Wynwood every month, big crowds turned out Saturday night for an evening that featured a punk street show, the Bat Mobile from Tim Burton’s 1989 film parked at O Cinema, and a pair of snakes. For more information about this past art walk, check out this month’s guide.

The food truck roundup that typically accompanies Second Saturdays Art Walk in Wynwood will not happen this month, according to its organizer. Shortly after noon today, the manager of Sakaya Kitchen — whose owner, Richard Hales, organizes the roundup — sent the following message to the food truck community via email: “Unfortunately the Wynwood event is not going to happen this month on the lot; the City will not give the permission … See you hopefully next month.”

Love ‘em or lament ‘em, the food trucks are going to be back in full force at Art Walk Saturday night. The organizer of the food truck roundup, which sets up in a lot west of N.W. Second Avenue, between 22nd Street and 23rd Street, just sent out an email to all the trucks eligible for the event proclaiming, “WE HAVE A PERMIT AND THE EVENT IS OFFICIALLY ON! START TWEETING AND GET THE WORD OUT!”
