Hunting down the GastroPod last night for a Dirt Dawg fix, I happened upon the grand opening of The Stage, an open-air music venue and bar in the Design District (170 NE 38th Street). It was about midnight and Stokeswood, a sincere but tame Atlanta quintet, had the stage (lowercase). Inside, the brick-walled space was crowded with yuppy Miami having a fabulous time. I spent most of the night by the Pod chatting up The State Of songstress Steph Taylor, who not only plays a mean synth but can assemble a Dirt Dawg with the best of ‘em. As for my first dive into The Stage — the latest edition to “Miami’s booming Music Corridor” (whatever/wherever the hell that is) — I guess I won’t write it off after a single visit. With its open layout and good location, it has inherent potential as a venue for some good music. But if opening night was any indication, The Stage may just become another place where Miamians go for expensive drinks and mediocre music. In which case, I’ll be by the food truck.
Here are some pictures from the opening.
